Instant Gratification: The Poison Of Our Generation
Welcome to the New Era
In 2017, we live in a world where almost every action and event is glorified and posted onto social media. At this point, it’s protocol to show everyone what you’re eating, where you are, or who you’re with just to get that instant gratification of likes, comments, and views. Whether it’s Snapchat or Instagram story, your circle is going to see exactly what you want them to see.
While this digital revolution has brought millions of users closer together, it has also shifted the way we interact and experience. We live in a society so fixated on instant gratification that we have lost the critical patience needed to build anything of substance.
Focus on who you Want to be
There is no need to showcase every little action in your life. It’s bad for your psyche. If you are really passionate about what you are devoting your time to, that should be your only focus. The number of likes that you get on your next Instagram post does not determine how fun an event was.
“You need to be patient with the results and impatient with your work ethic”
As you go on your journey, there will be days that you win and there will be days where you lose. It’s your job to stay consistent by keeping your head down and plugging away. It’s a matter of trusting the process, not a matter of putting on some facade to your old high school friends.
Social media has a way of tricking us into believing that we should have made it by now. If you are reading this, you are still so young and have so much time ahead of you. Figure out what you want to do in your life. Create a step-by-step process to get there and don’t worry about what Dan Bilzerian is doing on his yacht today.
Don’t be Upset at Those Who Don’t Think the Same Way
In life, there are things that you can control and there are things you cannot. For example, you cannot control if your best friend doesn’t define success the same as you but you can control how you feel about it. As you begin to adjust your habits towards self-improvement, your friends and family may not join you on this journey – and that’s okay! Everyone has different needs and wants. Just because they don’t align with your way of thinking, does not mean that they are in the wrong.
Accept their perspective and continue on with yours.
Work in Silence, Let Success Make The Noise
Too many people “promote” their new idea or business only for it to fail as just that- a mirage sent into social networks without any actual concrete work being put towards it.
Research has proven that by announcing your goals and plans publically, you manipulate your brain’s reward circuits into believing that goal has already been achieved. This is an extremely dangerous thing to do. The instant gratification that you receive from your peers can easily steer you towards feelings of false achievement.
“Sweat in private so that you can perform in public”
Why not just lay low for a while and grind it out? By keeping your goals to yourself and not posting on social media, there won’t be any need for instant gratification. It’s just you vs you. Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be anyways? This does not only apply to entrepreneurship. It could be working out, reading more, working towards a promotion, whatever you want it to be.
